CFP® CLU® · Founder, The Listening Company LLC · Founder & Director of Advisor Development, Gatewood Wealth Solutions

For 45 years, I sat across from clients at the most important moments of their financial lives. What I learned had very little to do with investments.

I founded my firm in Chicago in 1981. Over four decades, that firm grew and evolved into what continues today as Gatewood Wealth Solutions in St. Louis. I had a front row seat to something that took me years to fully understand. Over and over, I watched highly qualified, experienced, genuinely talented advisors whose practices never soared the way their credentials suggested they should. And I watched less experienced, sometimes less technically skilled advisors surpass them. Not by a little, but by a lot. The difference was never the knowledge. It was always the connection.

Imagine sitting with an advisor who knows more about tax law, portfolio construction, and estate planning than almost anyone in the room, and watching a newer advisor with half the credentials build twice the practice. Have you ever wondered why that happens? I did. For decades. And the answer, once I saw it clearly, was impossible to unsee. The clients did not leave for better returns. They stayed, referred, and advocated for the advisor who made them feel understood.

Imagine spending 45 years in those conversations: through market crashes, health crises, divorces, deaths, inheritances, and retirements. Through every moment when a client needed more than a plan. What you learn is not a technique. It is a discipline. And it is teachable.

That conviction drove everything I built with The Listening Advisor™ system: a framework grounded in 45 years of real client conversations, a self-assessment that gives advisors an honest starting point, and a book that makes the whole system accessible to anyone willing to do the work. Ask yourself honestly: do your clients feel completely understood when they leave your office? Not satisfied. Not informed. Understood. That question is where this work begins.

Across my career, I earned recognition as a Barron’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisor, an LPL Financial Top 10 Advisor in the 2020s, an MDRT multiple-year qualifier, and a Forum qualifier for Northwestern Mutual across multiple years from the 2000s through 2018.

I built The Listening Advisor™ with one purpose: to elevate communication standards across financial advisory. Because authentic human connection is not a soft skill. It is the one competitive advantage that has always mattered. And always will.

My late wife Annie passed away in 2015 after a courageous battle against ALS. What stays with me is not the struggle, though it was immense. It was how she carried herself through it. She was positive and smiling all the way through. That kind of grace under the hardest circumstances a person can face leaves a mark on you that shapes everything that comes after.

Judy is my strongest advocate, my daily support, and the love of my life. We split our time between Naples, Florida and St. Louis. My daughter Sophia lives in Washington D.C. with her husband Nick, and my son Anthony is in Sarasota, Florida with his fiancée Josey. They are the reason any of this matters.

Why This Work Matters

The Industry Has a Communication Crisis. It Has Mistaken Technology for Mastery.

"The client meeting is not the dress rehearsal. The performance happens every time you walk through that door."

The financial advisory profession has invested billions in technology, compliance, and technical training. It has invested almost nothing in the skill that actually determines whether a client stays, refers, and advocates.

That skill is communication mastery. It is coachable. Measurable. Teachable. That is what The Listening Advisor™ is built to prove. And it has been true for 45 years before AI entered the conversation.
